X: The X-Files *90's Pop Culture Favorites* #AtoZchallenge

TechnicallyI've never watched The X-Files (1993 - 2002). Er, I haven't figuratively watched it either, not so much as one episode. I wasn't as in touch with my nerd-side in the 90's as I am these days. BUT I adored the fandom that sprang up around The X-Files, and I'm 100% certain that whenever I get around to Netflixing or whatevering the show, I'm going to love it. Plus, X is a really, really difficult letter to work with so I'm going with it.

Hey, maybe while we're here you can help me out---do you have advice for a newb? Like, were the early seasons really good but they petered out later, or are any seasons skippable? Or does the series stay strong the whole way through, and I'd better get on it tout de suit?

We watched that show. Go ahead and start with the beginning. It started to lose steam in the end.
Big fan! I also featured X-Files today. The best episodes were the stand-alones. Didn't like the final season. It was a whole year of just watching Scully cry.

I didn't watch it in its day either but I've been thinking I might. Is it on Netflix?

Is it on Netflix? I need to see. I don't know...I feel like often things like that are good in their time, but they don't have the same value later. I don't know why that is.

Absolutely at the beginning. The characters change and grow.

I ADORED this show as a kid! My friends and I use to "play Xfiles" in the field and search for UFOs and the like :D

How could you not have watched this show?? Oh my, Nicki, you're going to love. Start at the beginning; the show is fantastic until the last season or so, but by then you'll be so hooked that it won't matter. I watch the reruns sometimes, though, and I can tell you that the early ones are gonna seem reeeeeally old. Check out the size of their 'cellphones'...

I never watched X-files either, but it sure seems a lot of people really liked it. And I agree "X" is such a hard letter.

When my husband and I first started dating we watched X-Files together diligently! I agree with Alex that the stand-alones were better. An episode that still sticks in my memory is "Home" from the 4th season. Super creepy!

I loved that show in the early years, particularly since I've long been into mysterious, unexplained phenomena. I still smile when I remember how one of my guy friends at my 8th grade social-studies table gave our enemy the wrong channel (and maybe time) when he expressed interest in the then-new show. The trick failed when our enemy realised that couldn't be the right time, possibly because he knew some other show was on then.

Some were spine-tingly cool and others were gruesome. This one about a guy who survives more than a hundred years by eating people's livers scared the friggin' crud out of me. I couldn't run on the treadmill without trying to turn around to look at the damn air vent in the ceiling the whole time. (He came through the vents.)

This is a great show to Netflix. You can literally see the influence the show had on pop culture and subsequent TV. Stuff like Lost and Fringe owe a huge debt to The X-Files, and I would go so far as to say more procedural-type shows like CSI or Castle or even 24 have been influenced as well.

I just rewatched the whole series last year on Netflix. It's really solid for 5 seasons, then it gets patchy. No one will blame you for stopping around season 7 (there are 9) but those early years are just fantastic. You can also play "Hey, it's that guy!" with a million actors that pass through as guest actors.

The AV Club's TV club has fantastic recaps of the series which they just wrapped up. The archives got me really into the idea of the rewatch.

I haven't seen X File either, but you hear references to it all the time in other shows. Maybe one day I'll check out the series, too.
