80s TV Shows: Groovy Geriatrics

Golden Girls
1985 - 1992

Picture this---Miami, 1985...four single women of very different personalities decide to live together after being widowed/divorced.  Hilarity ensues.

Quote:
"Like we say in St. Olaf, Christmas without fruitcake is like St. Sigmund's Day without the headless boy."

Trivia:
Two of the actresses were originally supposed to play different roles, but they worried about being typecast so they traded.  Which of these two do you think it was: Sophia, Blanche, Rose, Dorothy?

Since we're speaking of the letter G, I'd like to cordially invite anyone who'll be in or near the Fox Valley (western Chicago suburbs) on April 28th to my event, Grapes & Guys

We'll be pairing a wine with each of the Daves from Three Daves!

Afterwards, I'll post the wine selections here. :)

I absolutely love Golden Girls! I used to watch it whenever it was on, and even if I didn't understand a lot of the jokes until I got older, I still enjoyed it so much. Sofia was hilarious but I was always partial to Dorothy.

It was recently on one of the "women's channels" and I must have re-watched the series at least twice. Never gets old.

Was it Rose and Blanche that switched?

Great post! :)

I thought the Golden Girls was very funny. Every now and then Maude would step on my conservative toes but that was funny too.

Hmmmm wine! I like a good and delightful Cab. After all, wasn't it Niles who once said, Why walk when you can call a Cab?

LOVED the GOLDEN GIRLS... Still watch them in reruns. The rolls were Blanche and Rose. Betty always played the Vixen and Rue the bubblehead. I'm glad they made the switch.

What a great show! I'm so glad it's still playing in re-runs. It's one of the things I turn to when I've had a particularly unfunny day. :)

I used to watch the Golden Girls, too. I had always heard Rue was supposed to play Rose.
I am so happy to have found your blog!

I have no idea who traded roles. I can't picture any of them playing a different role then the one they ended up with.

Oh, I had no idea that Betty and Rue had switched roles. How interesting, to think back on it and see them in the opposite roles. Very fun.

Hi, I don't know if you have been watching the new show "Hot In Cleveland" that is on TV Land right now. I think it is very close to a remake of Golden Girls. Four women, with varying degrees of sexual drives, and Betty White playing the role that Estelle Getty played in Golden Girls. Personally, I don't like the Hot in Cleveland. Thanks for coming by and seeing me often.

Aw, I've been so happy to see Betty return to TV. No way can I picture her ever playing Blanche!

Love this show! I'm glad they've got it on reruns. My grandmother and her sister used to like it too, and make fun of themselves for looking like Sophia every time they carried their big purses.
