What makes you say Grrrrrrr (in a good way)?

Aaaand, I've got a little giveaway of my own going just to thank you for making my place one of your stops.

Here was the directive:
“What makes a hero in movies and books wonderful to the point your toes curl?”

To answer this question, I took a look at my movie crush history. There are many more men on this list, of course, but these are the ones about whom I was most obsessive:

The very first movie crush I can remember is Christopher Plummer as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music

Fast forward a couple decades, and Ray Liotta got my engines roaring as Henry Hill in Goodfellas

Along came Tommy Lee Jones as Samuel Gerard in The Fugitive

Followed by Alan Rickman as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies.

And then Jack Davenport as Commodore Norrington in Pirates of the Caribbean

I don't have a movie crush at the moment, but my TV crush du jour is Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester in Supernatural.

So what's the common denominator? If you followed any of the links above, you'll see that they lead to audio as well as visual, and that's because the voice is key. It's gotta be deep and it's gotta rumble. Grrrrrr. Judging by the captain, US marshall, professor, and naval officer on my list, I'd say it appears I have a little somethin' for authority figures too. Who knew?

So how about you, what is it about a movie/book hero/heroine that makes you grrrrrr?

Kate Beckinsale as Serena in Underworld! (That probably comes as no surprise...)

Oh my gosh, Captain Von Trapp. I totally loved him when I was a kid! Now I'll be singing Edelweiss in my head the rest of the day. :)

You had a crush on Captain Von Trapp when you were a kid? That's adorable. I love it! My very first move crush was Cary Elwes in The Princess Pride - those big blue eyes when he says, "As you wish"???? Still gets me to this day.

Jessica Alba had that effect on me for about a decade. Hey, I think her restraining order on me is about to expire!
Plummer was brilliant in that you hated him so much at first and came to love him at the end. Inspired choice.

SWAGGER :) Confidence, especially when it's tempered by humor (and if it's warranted). Think Han Solo. Captain Malcom Reynolds. In real life, Tom Hardy and Idris Elba make my toes curl. A man who knows he's good doesn't have to brag--he SWAGGERS--lol

Oh yeah! The grrr works on me too. Severus Snape's voice... mmmm, and Dean Winchester! Oh yes. Funny enough, a little geekiness works for me as well.

It depended on which season it was as to if I like Dean or Sam more. That's probably bad of me. I think it's in the eyes and I'm drawn to the bad guy who under it all is really a good guy. Although, sometimes it's hard to see the good in them, like Damon from Vampire Diaries.

Those smart, awkward, nerd kids who are SO CUTE once they are made up a little.

Really like you stroll down memory lane of your past favs and I agree with all of them, except maybe, Severus. Interesting choice. Stop by Imagination Gone Wild if you have a chance.
Thanks so much for the giveaway! You rock!

:) This was fun to read. I'm sitting here trying to think of other leading men with deep voices to suggest. I'll come back if I think of any!

For me, I think guys who can communicate with just an immaculately-timed facial expression in response to something--letting me know in an instant that the gears are cranking with just a shift of the eyes--well ... gets me every time.

You already know that I'm putty in the hands of a man in uniform. However, there's one other. Yes, I can be swayed by a Scotsman. I can blush at the thought of being alone with (hell, I can't even remember his name) the main male character in The Outlander. See me blushing??

OH How could I ever forget Snape, he definitely is on my list too. As well as Aragorn.

I like a pretty face. Hence, Johnny Depp and Ryan Gosling. Colin Firth. I never had a crush on Captain Von Trapp.

Love,

OMG! Here I thought for years I'm the only one who love Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive and Alan Rickman as Severus Snape! XD
I always change my preference though. Maybe it depends on the characters, and my mood. Sometimes I liked the hero to be dark and gloomy, the other time I love him to be cheerful easy going kind of man.

It seems you also like your crushes a little on the dark side. Voice is important, though. A high pitched man grates on my nerves.

I love a caring, protective hero, one who can go all alpha male, yet doesn’t feel threatened and even encourages their loved one taking the lead and taking charge. A sense of humor is also important. It doesn’t matter if it’s just goofiness, dry humor, wit, etc, just some type of sense of humor. He has to be able to deal with feelings, not all, oh I’m a guy, we don’t do those things, over-macho crap. I want a guy who’s secure in his massculinity (you know, not afraid to wear pink or scared people will think he’s “gay” or “a girl” for actually doing/enjoying things like going to the theatre or dressing fashionably). Loyalty and fidelity are extremely important as well as being able to cook. A guy who can cook is super sexy. And romantic at heart as well.
