Monstrous Monday

Welcome to Monstrous Monday, hosted by Tim Brannan at The Other Side blog. The rules to this one are simple: talk about monsters. For my post, I've decided to tell you about the first monster to ever make me legitimately scared to walk outside at night...eh, daytime too if I'm being honest.

I was pretty young when I met this monster, young enough that I don't remember exactly how young, but I'm going to guess about 7ish. I'm fuzzy on memories from that age, but this one is fairly sharp. My family and I were visiting our old neighbors, the Taylors, at their new house in Hanover Park. We sat as a group in their family room watching a movie on TV:

Or "Son of Blob" as it was dubbed for its TV release.  My little heart started pounding the moment that woman inadvertently thawed the blob, thinking it was tomato sauce. The first victim, a fly. The second...

Nooooo!!!  With each kill the blob grew, as did my conviction that my parents should've never let me watch that movie. When the ordeal finally ended and it was time to go home, my courageous father went outside to warm the car---ALONE!  And everyone else acted like it was no big deal.  Hadn't they just witnessed the Blob's silent but deadly approach?  Didn't they see how its victims had no idea of the danger until they were hip deep in the unstoppable red ooze?  How could they sit there talking and laughing while my father was in mortal peril??

He came back in before I could work myself into anything more than a silent worry, and I was very happy to see him.  But it was a loooong time before I was comfortable being near a can of tomato paste again. I stayed wary of marinara until Kevin Dillon & Co. came along with this...

Come on, you knew I had to work in the 80s somehow. ;)  If you haven't seen this movie it's a pretty fun & funny retelling of the original Blob movie. What better way to face your fears than to laugh at them, right?

Now that we've conquered that monster, we've got lots more waiting for you in this Linky.

Oh, I remember the Blob. What a fun movie!
I've seen both versions. Second one wasn't bad.
I was also afraid and incensed when watching this movie. How could something so slow do so much damage. It scared the crap out of me and made me mad at the same time. :)
Loved it! Great choice!
I remember the Blob! Most monsters you can reason with or even find a weakness. The Blob just eats and eats. Though I always wondered why it never ate the ground it was on.

In real life we have Slime Molds that look just like the blob and move like it too! Take that Hollywood! Nature still has freakier stuff!

Thanks so much for participating.

I don't think I've ever seen that one. I'm more of a silent and early sound horror type of person. The movie that really scared me as a kid was Cocoon, in the scene where the woman steps out of her skin and becomes an alien. I don't know why my parents thought that were a good movie to bring a kid my age to.

I remember the trailer for the Blob was scary enough. My mom wouldn't let me see the movie because she said it looked gross. Oh well...

The blob is definitely a classic monster - haven't thought of that one in a while. Awesome pick.

I laughed out loud at this. *snort* But yeah, your parents let you watch it? My parent let me watch some horror movie when I was very young and I've never gotten over it. I don't even know the name of the movie, just that there were body parts all over the beach! I'd love to watch it again, just to exorcize it from my system.

The Blob! Wow--that's right up there with The Green Slime, and The Stuff. All very amorphous, nasty creatures...

Oh, the Blob was so much fun. Great pick.
I've watched the new and the old blob. It is creepy though I always thought the people could have just run away.

I've never seen the 80's version and only recently saw the 50's version with Steve McQueen. It wasn't all that bad. I'd heard about this film since I was a kid and knew the premise, but it never seemed to come on TV when I was watching. The Blob is a pretty cool--and terrifying--monster.

I don't need to watch that movie. I am a blob.

Strange in that the original blob was green and came out in the mid 60's if I recall my monster movies correctly. Methinks you'd have been better off staying away from such creatures as pea soup and asparagus. lol Cheers!

That's different. I remember watching The Blob but I think cuz it wasn't vicious looking, it didn't bother me. it is pretty gross tho.

Hope you had an awesome Halloween!
