Rafe, Jo's best friend, refuses to sit by and watch as Luc tries to win the heart of the woman he's always protected. After all, Rafe is her guardian angel. Suddenly, Jo's caught in the middle of a battle between good and evil. But the closer she gets to the fire, the hotter it burns. Now, Jo's going to learn that when love battles lust, Heaven and Hell collide.

Excerpt
To my surprise, Mr. DeVille scratches Atticus behind the ears instead of pushing him away. “Since we’re stuck here, what should we do?” Finished with his sandwich, he wipes his mouth with his thumb. I’d have been more than willing to lick it clean for him.

A pounding on the door interrupts us. Dadgumit, just when things are about to get interesting with Mr., er, Luc. I scurry to the door, intent on getting rid of whoever it is. I find Rafe holding a bag of food and two cups of coffee.

“Hey, I figured your power was still out, so I brought you some coffee and breakfast.” His eyes scan my small apartment, narrowing when he spies Luc.

Mr. DeVille smirks. “What impeccable timing. Goodman, is it?” He casually swings his legs over the side of the bed and steps into his pants.

“Yes, sir.” Although polite, Rafe’s voice has an edge to it. The tension in the air snaps like an impending storm. “The roads are clear, although Mrs. Cabot called and said not to come to work today since schools are still closed and the power remains off for much of the area. Here included, I see.”

“How astute of you to notice. No wonder I pay you the big bucks. Of course Mrs. Cabot said to stay home. It isn’t her losing money, is it?”

Mr. DeVille pulls off my sweatshirt, revealing those cut abs. I stare unabashedly, and Rafe snaps his fingers in front of my face. Luc buttons his shirt, glaring at Rafe the entire time.

“Well, Friday. Thank you for the hospitality. I’m sure since Goodman flew here on the icy roads to check on you, I’ll have no problems getting home. I suggest you take today to study for your classes, and remember I’ll be more than happy to help with your homework assignments.” His eyes flash with desire, and my cheeks heat.

Rafe snarls, looking positively feral.

“A-Are you sure the roads are okay? Would you like a cup of this coffee before you go?”

“I only brought two cups,” Rafe protests.

Shocked by his rudeness—and to our boss, no less—I quickly offer, “Mr. DeVille can have my cup.” What has gotten into him?

Ignoring Rafe, Mr. DeVille turns to me as he shrugs into his coat. “That’s quite all right. Thank you, Friday.” He gives me a conspiratorial wink and a smile.

Rafe, in comparison, receives a cool nod. The hair on my arms stands on end when Mr. DeVille stops and turns to face my friend. I must be having some sort of low blood sugar event because I swear it looks like the rims of his blue eyes have turned the color of a hot stove eye. I blink and find him glaring at Rafe, and the look is returned in kind. Good thing we aren’t living in a century past. If we were, I’m quite certain there would be a duel at fifty paces. He leaves without saying another word.

Rafe slams the door with a muttered, “Good riddance.”

I cross my arms in front of my chest. “Thanks a lot.”

“You’re welcome.” He ignores my sarcasm.

I sigh and gratefully accept the warm to-go cup. I can’t stay mad at him for long; he’s my best friend.

And he has coffee.

Oh the Places You'll Go #Bloghop #Giveaway #backtoschool #bts

Welcome to the Oh! The places you'll go! Back-to-School Giveaway Hop, hosted by The Kids Did It and The Mommy Island.

So,,,,why did I think having college-age kids would mean summers would slow down? It's actually crazier than when they were little because my life's moved on to include a day job and a writing career that don't take the summers off—but the kids show back up and a whole new layer of activity dashes any hope of routine. At least it's a good kind of crazy. :)

Still, I look forward to a few weeks from now when they'll be back into their routines and I can get back to mine. One of my favorite things to do with a little extra "me time" is to escape into a good book. If you want to escape into a light, chick-litty romance, The Romance Reviews has selected my latest release, WHEN IT HOOKS YOU, as a Top Pick! The story's set in fabulous Chicago but it also includes a tropical location if you're looking to get a little further away.

PRICE DROP during the hop!
Download for only $2.99 until August 10.
Three dates. It was only supposed to be three dates—he was only meant to be a fling. I didn’t want to feel all of this for him. And I certainly hadn’t counted on him keeping such a deal-breaking secret from me.

Till death is too long for Trish Cerise. The twenty-seven year old receptionist is tired of men asking for her forever when she just wants to keep things light and fun. World-traveling businessman Adam Helms steps off the elevator and into her life with his own reasons for keeping relationships at a safe distance. Together, they’re destined for the most glorious short-term romance in history…until they break their own rules and Trish learns something about Adam she wishes she never knew.

I know a future with him is impossible, but how do you break away from such an intense, consuming, heart-crushing love when it hooks you? ~Trish

What goes great with any kind of escape? A warm—or iced—cup of something yummy from Starbucks. My prize for the Giveaway Hop is a $5 gift card to Starbucks. I'm sponsoring this prize and will send the winner an e-gift card directly from the Starbucks site.

#ComedyBookWeek: Review of THE SECRET NOTEBOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES by Liz Hedgecock

Welcome back to #ComedyBookWeek, an annual online celebration of humor in writing. Today I'm reviewing one of the books featured in this event: THE SECRET NOTEBOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES by Liz Hedgecock.

Before we begin, let's set a little atmosphere, shall we? This photo was taken at 221b Baker Street last fall. As you see, Sherlock and Watson are still very much engrossed in cracking cases.

My Review
This book of short stories had me at the prologue, when we learn of the discovery of Watson's secret notebook at the site pictured above, now a museum. When you tour the museum you really do forget that Holmes was a fictional character, so it's easy to believe some old relic might be found hidden in a secret compartment of a drawer.

These newly discovered stories are from the duo's sleuthing partnership, so they're lighter fare than what we see from them later on. It's entertaining to watch Sherlock puzzle over cases such as how to divert the innocent honesty of a child from becoming an international incident, and what happened to the prize inside a Christmas cracker? What I most enjoyed about the passages in the Secret Notebook was the classic, dry Sherlocky wit.

Since they're all very short, these stories are perfect to have on a mobile reading app to pull out whenever you have a few minutes of waiting in store for you.

Meet Sherlock Holmes before he was famous!

The discovery of a maroon leather notebook hidden in the great detective’s sock drawer caused a sensation. Now readers can join Holmes and Watson on a romp through 19th-century London, in 29 new and remarkable early cases.

These humorous short stories feature appearances by Mycroft Holmes, Inspector Lestrade, and other familiar characters, as well as cameos from several well-known Victorians. They also contain numerous historical liberties.

Can Holmes and Watson solve the mystery of Mornington Crescent? Why are all the policemen whispering at Scotland Yard? Is the world prepared for the case of the Giant Rat of Sumatra? Read The Secret Notebook of Sherlock Holmes to find out...

Quickie Interview with Author Karen Tomsovic for #ComedyBookWeek

Welcome to #ComedyBookWeek, an annual online celebration of humor in writing. Today, I'm interviewing Karen Tomsovic, author of feel-good romance in contemporary urban settings. Congrats to Karen on her brand new release, HEART THROBS!

Those of you who've frequented my blog know that there's one question I can never resist asking an author...

Q. Nicki: If you had to pick one song that best captures the essence of HEART THROBS, which song would you choose and why?

A. Karen: Since this is for an event about comedy, I suppose I should come up with something funny. But the “soundtrack” in my head for this couple is actually quite romantic. And comedy isn’t just jokes; it’s also form. Heart Throbs is a romantic comedy and one of the genre's tropes—whether in Shakespeare or Hollywood—is to have some sort of big wedding scene, either at the climax or as the happy ending.

While writing the first draft, I would listen to this CD of flamenco versions of popular love ballads. It was a CD recommended to me by a co-worker who was friends with the musician who recorded it and it quickly became a favorite of mine. So as I was writing I kept visualizing my couple, that would be Amanda and Darrell, dancing to this music in several scenarios: at their reception and then in the bedroom on their wedding night, and later still as newlyweds on some sunny terrace in a mountain setting.

Darrell’s a bit of a clown and merely a passable dancer, but Amanda’s more refined and graceful on her feet. She classes him up, but in dancing as in their life together, he proves himself worthy to be a suitable match for her.

HEART THROBS by Karen Tomsovic

Famous friends become much more...

Twenty-nine-year-old Amanda Monroe is about to make her white picket fence fantasy come true. The New York actress vows to wrap her role on a hit sitcom, marry the non-actor of her dreams, and put down the roots she’s always wanted—all before she turns thirty.

But when two irresistible movie stars come to guest for a week, one a leading man with a juicy role to cast and the other an old flame, Amanda finds herself torn between the life she says she's always wanted and an even brighter future.

A Whole New Meaning for "Indy" Author #IWSG

A couple of weeks ago Raiders of the Lost Ark came back to the big screen at a theater by my house It was SO exciting. It was also the first time I’ve seen the movie since hearing the infamous Amy Farrah Fowler theory on the film. If you don’t know, the fictional neurobiologist says the movie has a glaring flaw in that Indiana Jones has no impact on the outcome.

Do you ever feel like that as a writer? Like no matter how much time and effort you put into crafting stories, putting them out into the world, and then implementing brilliant marketing strategies, you always end up in the same place? Like all your work has no impact whatsoever on the literary world, much less your bank account?

Yeah, me, too. But then I figured out that Mizz Fowler's theory is full of monkey poop. Allow me to explain...

I had a new book release on June 15, and it had an awesome opening week. Amazon rankings like I've never seen before. All this without the help of a romance publisher, which I for too long convinced myself would provide the support, expertise, and credibility I'd need to succeed. And then guess what happened - Nickiana Jones friggin' smiled.

Y'know how whenever Indy allows himself a smile, a moment to revel in his success things suddenly take a downward turn? Yeah, that. Moving into week two, I realized my opening week sales wouldn't propagate all on their own. I couldn't just sit back and expect more and more new readers to continue to find my book. And THEN during my struggle to accept that I must regroup and continue to work my bum off, I saw the flaw in Amy Farrah Fowler's reasoning.

The point of Indiana Jones isn't that he succeeds in his quest to find the Ark and bring it to a museum for research. Nope. The point of Indy is that no matter how many times that man is shot down, beat up, bested, and thrown to the snakes, he gets up, resets his sights on his goal, and goes after it again and again and again.

Maybe I'm just too stupid or stubborn to give up, but I choose to be an Indy author. He may not always win, but he has way more fun that Belloq, right?

As part of my ongoing quest to figure this publishing thing out...
(you may need to think back to your pre-writer days)
